That proved to be something the Leixen VV-898 can’t do at all. Sensitivity isn’t everything though the capability to separate wanted signals from unwanted signals is much more important. With an average sensitivity of -127dBm the Leixen is amongst the most sensitive radios around. The receiver is sensitive, very sensitive. on UHF it’s slightly better because there’s no third harmonic to worry about. On VHF the 2nd harmonic is just short of 50dBm down, the 3rd harmonic is only 43 dBm down. It is more than enough power for daily use, especially when using repeaters. With 10 Watts output on VHF and 8 Watts on UHF (confirmed) the Leixen VV-898 isn’t trying to compete with the bigger radios. That was not the case carrier looks reasonably clean, even with reduced frequency span. Replacing the stock electret element inside the microphone for a better one might be something to consider if you want improve the TX audio.īecause I noticed a lot of intermod (see receiver section) I suspected the oscillator of being unstable, aka suffering from phase noise. It won’t win any HiFi award, but all stations agreed that there were no other issues which would prevent one from understanding what you’re saying. Slightly deprived of highs as well as lows. I couldn’t hear any LF distortion, nor excessive noise. Yet the radio will do much better with an external speaker, especially when you intend to use the radio in a car. Surprisingly good, especially with the small case and tiny speaker in mind. I could have disassembled the radio even further, but didn’t want to risk damaging my friend’s radio.

The inside of the radio doesn’t reveal much. Yet I managed to figure it out in a matter of minutes, probably because by now I’m a proficient interpreter of cryptic ChinEnglish manuals.

The menu takes a while to get used to, mainly because the manual isn’t very helpful.

Keys work well, layout is good, and the microphone is full featured and fits nicely in anyones hand.

If the Leixen would be a bit bigger, it would have the looks of a professional land mobile radio. I’ve spent a while with the Leixen now, so it’s time for a review. I was surprised that this dual-band radio was even smaller than I thought it’s actually not much bigger than a UV-5R. It was a Leixen VV-898, which he bought for just over 100 Euros. Brick had his hands full with posting about Leixen, and quite a few reviews can be found on the When I was walking the dogs a few weeks ago Teun PA0TBS joined me and took something out of his bag. ↳ Licence Free (PMR446/LPD433/SRD860/2.The little cheap Leixen radios made the headlines more than once.↳ CB & 11m Multi-Mode Modification & Repair.↳ CB & 11m Multi-Mode Radio Equipment Discussion.↳ CB Radio - General Topics and Discussion.

Granted, it takes a little longer what with all the menu's and PC programming, but once you've learned it's easy running. Put in the time and effort to get to know the radio and it will become second nature to operate. But who didn't spend hours working out the bands, modes and fine/coarse controls on their 148/360 when they first traded up from an AM or UK40 set? Today is no different. They should be, we've all been using them for decades so it's second nature. It's like comparing a state of the art PC to the first computer. Cars, televisions, telephones etc have all moved forward in great leaps and bounds. * Are they easier or worse to live with than 'the classics'? Not so keen on the front mounted mic socket. It has its gimmicks as a lot of these new radio's do, but as with some of the other new radio's these gimmicks don't outshine the quality and performance of the radio. Heavy and rugged, no loose controls or ill fitting cases. It has a good RF output of 60W so can manage good quality DX without needing a linear. A great feature is being able to switch between channel/band and VFO operation. It has a good, strong receive which is clear and easily intelligible. With my MFJ 299 it gets mistaken for a HF radio. The TX audio on SSB is outstanding, even on the stock mic. Each has it's individual traits, but by far my favourite and most used is the Stryker. A Lincoln 2, Grant 2, Maas DX5000, Alinco DR-135DX, CRE 8900, Midland 8001XT, Albrecht AE7500 and a Stryker SR-955HP.
